WHO IS KURT LYKES?

Kurt Lykes is one of the most sought-after vocalists in the Gospel music industry. His gifted, soulful and inviting sound is the true essence of genuine and pure devotion and worship. Beyond his talents as a gifted artist, songwriter, and author, Kurt has the passion and heart to infuse hope in every situation his listeners may be going through, transcending age groups and cultures. He is a published author of ‘Shots for the Soul’ (Volumes 1, 2, and 3).

 

Kurt has traveled and performed nationally and internationally with various artists for over 21 years, which has prepared him for his own endeavors in the music industry. For over five years, he traveled as a background singer with the Dove Award-winning artist, Helen Baylor. Kurt presently travels and co-writes with Grammy-nominated South African guitarist, Jonathan Butler. Kurt co-wrote the hit single ‘Brand New Day’ on Butler’s debut Gospel project also titled, ‘Brand New Day.’ Kurt also co-wrote the hit song ‘So Strong’ (along with six other songs) on Butler’s urban project ‘So Strong.’ Kurt co-wrote the single ‘I Stand on Your Word’ (along with five other songs), on Butler’s contemporary Gospel CD, ‘Grace and Mercy.’

 

Kurt has also experienced international solo success with his chart-topping single, ‘Yes Lord (House Remix),’ which played for 12 weeks at No. 2 on London radio. Kurt has worked with famed music producer David Foster, performed around the world, and has been featured on a variety of projects with industry giants such as: Chance The Rapper, Common, John Legend, Beyonce, Mary Mary, Tamela Mann, the group 1975, Stevie Wonder, Yolanda Adams, Kirk Franklin, BeBe Winans, Fred Hammond, Andrea Bocelli, Madonna, Josh Groban, Mary J. Blige, Michael Bolton, Boyz II Men, Kirk Whalum, Gerald Albright, the late Wayman Tisdale, the late Al Jarreau, George Duke, Ledisi, and many others.

 

Additionally, Kurt is featured with Strate Vocalz on the Grammy Award-nominated ‘Motown Comes Home’ album, and penned and performed lead vocals for ‘Lord You Are Welcome’ on the Stellar Award-nominated ‘Shout Hallelujah’ CD. ‘Lord You Are Welcome’ went on to be placed in a worldwide hymnal entitled, ‘Zion Still Sings’. Kurt is also featured with one of the world’s greatest female percussionists—Sheila E.—on ‘The Compilation Masterpiece,’ along with Gospel greats: Daryl Coley, Lowell Pye (of Men of Standard), and the late Kayla Parker. This multi-faceted artist is also featured as a writer/arranger and lead vocalist on the ‘Faithful Central Live’ CD, produced by Warryn ‘Baby Dubb’ Campbell.

In addition, Kurt has appeared on several television programs, including a performance at the 2017 Grammy Awards with Chance The Rapper, Tamela Mann, and Kirk Franklin, the 2016 ESPY Awards with Chance The Rapper, The 2015 ESPY Awards with Beyonce, John Legend and Common, the 2005 Grammy Awards with Kanye West and John Legend, and American Idol (Seasons 2 and 3) performing with Clay Aiken, Kelly Clarkson, Ruben Studdard, and Fantasia Barrino. Kurt has been featured leading worship on the Trinity Broadcasting Network (TBN), Good Morning America, the Tonight Show with Jay Leno, The Jamie Foxx Show, Sister,Sister, and ‘A Tribute to the Late Aaron Spelling’.

 

Kurt, a native Californian, is presently the Director of Worship Arts at Center of Hope in Inglewood, California, where Geremy Dixon is the Pastor. Kurt also leads worship at Faithful Central Bible Church in Inglewood, California, where Bishop Kenneth C. Ulmer is the Pastor. Kurt’s most recent work is featured on the project ‘Captivated’ which was released October 2015. He penned five original songs and is featured on a duet with his life friend and writing partner, Jonathan Butler. To date, Kurt has penned and released two more original singles ‘The Biggest Party Ever Thrown,’ and ‘He’s Alive.’

 

In a recent interview, Kurt states: “Every opportunity and open door I’ve had to work with each of these true legends in the music industry is a blessing. Each of these experiences have peeled away a new layer and revealed something more inside of me, ultimately resulting in what listeners hear in my music and read in my books. I believe what I enjoy most is the joy I find in seeing how different we all are, all the different gifts we all possess; but how beautiful a masterpiece we can make when we all play our part.”

 

Kurt expresses his love and passion for music by saying, “What comes from the heart reaches the heart, and I believe what people are searching for is something they feel is truly genuine and can relate to. I believe my gifts have been given to capture listeners / readers, and their hearts, so they can sense a genuine human connection of love, which ultimately comes from God.”
